the subtle announcement

... is a valuable tool. the slowly revealed opening up of an idea or agenda is a far more delicate and memorable experience than the shock tactic.

the most valuable relationship is one which develops over time. new facets brought out and angles developed. learning and understanding. the thing which shows its hand upon the opening glance is one of shallow insecurity.

secrecy isn't a cause for concern, it just hints at more to reveal.

finishing ...

... never happens. design is never complete, the artistry moves from one to another. the architect hands over to the manafacturer. the manafacturer to the client. the client to the user. year to year.

the handrail on the rialto bridge in venice was 'completed' by antonio da ponte in 1591. but it is still being completed to this day. the side of each handrail closest to the steps is being crafted by millions of subtle artists every year. the side closer to the water is being crafted by the weather and age. over a short distance the same material is taking on different characteristics. veiny and tough on one side, smooth and cold on the other.

the patience of construction is paramount. in a culture of the immediate, of the design award going to the product that hasn't left the factory or had the scaffolding removed, the concept of bedding in and of time as an artist are being lost.

questioning ...

... the initial reading is healthy. creating a space which offers various readings is healthy. without wanting to disturb or disorientate the navigator, a space can throw open possibilities.

to suggest is not to tease but to open ideas. to play is to raise activity and to interact with the reading of the surroundings. it is not always dangerous to have an unreliable terrain, it means the reader has to check their footing, has to confirm the route is a route. it promotes dialogue between the two.

the brief moment of doubt and rereading brings the domain closer and makes it real. any questions which follow are developing a relationship.
